EditorsPick: Smokin', güiro ripping salsa from singer Benedict  
Patiño. Here's a hot number right out of Medellin, Colombia, where  
salsa is still spelled with a capitol "S." Now, six of these tracks  
appeared on Benedict's first release (2001, also titled Tengo Un  
Tumbao). So, we're assuming the remaining nine tracks are new and  
have been combined with the earlier material to create a more  
extensive 15 track disc. It's all fiery montuno and moña driven salsa  
with deep, deep grooves - high impact, without overproduction clutter.

societies existed in eastern Cuba. These societies put on elaborate  
shows during carnival dressed in ballroom costumes of 18th century  
France singing songs and playing purely African rhythms. Today only  
two such societies remain.
The music of Tumba Francesa la Caridad de Oriente is both traditional  
and modern, with both a vast historical legacy and an important role  
in contemporary Cuba. The CD comes with introduction, extensive  
sleevenotes (by Cuban music authority Ned Sublette) and photography.

EditorsPick: Solid old school salsa for the dancers. Timbalero Willie  
Villegas and his band have helped to keep the New York club scene  
hopping for years, and Salsa En La Calle is a good panorama of their  
style which ranges from descarga to salsa to cumbia to plena, bolero,  
guaracha, merengue and montuno. Some of the covers they interpret  
here are "Amalia Batista" (which includes an Al Jolson impression by  
Angel Morales), "Mentrosa," "Bilongo," and Lavoe's "Sonero."
Also comes with a DVD with segments from Villega's public access TV  
show "Salsa En La Calle." Guests include Ernie Acevedo y Conjunto  
Imagen, Fajardo Jr. y Sus Estrellas, Orlando Marin - who does a  
killer set, and Villegas and his crew. Most of the material is live  
from club El Flamingo. The DVD quality is low, so don't expect high  
fidelity. Some of the performances, however, especially that of the  
veteran timbalero bandleader Orlando Marin, are well worth having in  
your collection.
