CONJUNTO CLASICO
En Concierto: Sólo Éxitos Live In Colombia - DVD & CD
Codiscos / Salsa Power (original import)
Originally released: 2007
Category: DVD; SALSA/SON
EditorsPick: Excellent live performance by the venerable Conjunto
Clasico led by Raymond Castro. The is superb old-school salsa, and
Mr. Castro used the opportunity to highlight his latest find, a lanky
new lead vocalist named Héctor Luis whose clear, cutting, timbre begs
comparison to the late Héctor Lavoe. This kid is good, and he glides
through the conjunto's best hits with ease, radiating a focused
intensity that suggests that he was born to do this. Héctor debuted
on last year's Si Ella Estuviera.
The band has no trouble keeping the audience happy, giving them
savory renditions of "Señora Ley", Los Rodríguez", " Ay, Que Bueno",
"Sin Rumbo Alguno" and "Vamomos De Rumba". Terrific tres-work by
Clásico veteran José García. Also with conguero George Delgado, Chino
Ramos on bongos, bassist Héctor "Máximo" Rodríguez, pianist Nito
Carraquillo and trumpeters Angie Machacdo, Julito Alvarado and Richie
Viruet. Additional vocals and coro by David Navedo and Ramón Rodriguez.
With a biographic interviews with Ramóh Rodríguez, coroista and
founder of Conjunto Clásico, as well as band leader Raymond Castro. A
CD and DVD package set.
Highly Recommended. (BP)

GHETTO BROTHERS
Power - Fuerza
Salsa International
Reissued: 2007
Category: LATIN SOUL/BOOGALOO; LATIN SOUL, CLASSIC 60s or 70s
EditorsPick: Now here's a special find. Mid '70s Latin rock and soul
from da Bronx. With a sound akin to west coast chicano rock of the
period i.e. Malo, Azteca etc., the Ghetto Brothers have a more rough
and raw sound and look. While other Latin soul bands of time were
dressing suave, the brothers looked to the Ramones and biker clubs
for fashion tips. The core of the Ghetto Brothers is made up of the
Melendez brothers: Robert (bass), Victor (lead vocals) and Benny
(congas). They have a great sound: a Latin percussion foundation
topped with rock-combo harmonies bathed in a greasy sincerity. Listen
to "I Saw a Tear" with the talking section working over the bridge.
It could have been an out-take from Zappa's Ruben & The Jets. That's,
by the way, a compliment. And the calling card opening track "Girl
From The Mountain" is utterly primo stuff. A hit. Love the CD.
Highly Recommended. (BP)

TITO NIEVES
Canciones Clasicas De Marco Antonio Solis
Univision/La Calle/Universal
Originally released: 2007
Category: SALSA/SON; SALSA
EditorsPick: Ok, the veteran salsero interprets the compositions of
the Mexican composer Marco Antonio Solis... slow, sugary ballads,
right? Wrong! While some of the tracks do make use of the Miami
Symphony for a full, lush, effect - don't be fooled. This is, in most
part, a muscular capital "S" salsa release that bears the merits of
being produced by Sergio George and Diego Gale. Nieves is the perfect
candidate for this project: listen to him kick it on the explosive
"Si Te Pudiera Mentir." The tight band stays right with him: with
Galé on percussion, Alberto Barros and Morist Jimenez on trombones,
Pablo Grajales and Ceferino Cabánon piano, and many others.
Highly Recommended. (BP)

RUMBEROS DE CUBA
Habana De Mi Corazón
Egrem (original import)
Originally released: 2007
Category: FOLKLORIC; RUMBA and/or SANTERIA/LUCUMI; CUBA
EditorsPick: This has got to be one of the most killer pure rumba CDs
to come out of Cuba in a long while. Under the direction of Rodolfo
Chacón Tartabull, Rumberos De Cuba captures the electric intensity
and sparse beauty of the rumba. Mostly guaguancó, with a columbia and
a yambú for good measure. Superb sound, and a bonus video track
"Habana de Mi Corazón." A folkloric sizzler.
Highly Recommended. (BP)

VICTOR HUGO
Que Pasa
LAS Records / HMP
Originally released: 2007
Category: SALSA/SON; SALSA
EditorsPick: Colombia keeps churning out the goods. With Que Pasa,
his third CD as a leader, Victor Hugo proves that he's no fluke. This
guy is polished *and* tough. Hugo, backed by other former Grupo Niche
members, embraces the entirety of salsa. From the hard-driving
uptempo tracks "Ella" and "Que Pasa" to the unashamedly direct
declaration of love "Island Girl" - he has matured into a formitable
leader who commands respect even when singing softly. I especially
like the swanky, swinging "Oye Latino" and the explosive showstopper
"Korin Gabe" - perfect dance club numbers.
Highly Recommended. (BP)

ARSENIO RODRIGUEZ Y SU CONJUNTO
Primitivo
Tico
Originally released: 1963
Reissued: 1999
Category: SALSA/SON; SON, GUARACHA, GUAJIRA
EditorsPick: Old stock found! Limited quantities!
**Classics Revisited**
Typically there are negligible personnel credits given on Primitivo,
originally issued in 1963 on the Roost label. However you cannot miss
the unmistakable nasal voice of Monguito on lead vocals, making his
US album debut after relocating there in 1962. Never the less,
despite the anonymity of the musicians, all the magisterial
ingredients are there. Arsenio's forceful and emotional tres guitar
playing was at its prime, as evidenced by his solo on the frenzied
"No Lo Niegues" and the gentler flamenco-style tour de force on
"Coplas De España". The trumpets soar and splutter, and a mystery
trumpeter solos on "Me Engañastes Juana" and "Que Mala Suerte". With
the exception of the subsequently much covered "Lo Que Dice Justi" by
Justi Barreto, Arsenio composed the remaining 11 songs, which include
the classics "Fiesta En El Solar" and "Que Mala Suerte". Though
overlooked at the time, this album is a key part of Arsenio's
influential legacy.
Highly Recommended. (John Child)
Description: Arguably Arsenio's best record during this part of his
career. Beautiful, rich son montunos that feature his virtuosity on
the tres guitar, as well as his shining rhythm section. Highly
Recommended. (BP 12/26/99)

1. La Pasion (3:00) 2. Me Engañastes Juana (2:30) 3. Lo Que Dice

SEPTETO MONTIMAR TRINIDAD
Un Swing Sabroso
BIS (original import)
Originally released: 2005
Category: SALSA/SON; SON, GUARACHA, GUAJIRA; CUBA
EditorsPick: Here's a strong vocal and tres-based son record that's
both modern and traditional. It's an interesting hybrid, mixing pop
vocals with deep, funky tres-bongo grooves. Crisp, hard driving Cuban
swing with young singers. The band rhythm section builds good
momentum, but it's the harmonizing vocalists that clearly
differentiates this band from the rest. Septeto Monitmar is a Cuban
band that has worked in Trinidad for the past 15 or so years. At it's
most modern, there's hint of timba-pop ("Eres Tú"). Their repertoire
is smart, borrowing from the books of José Ferrer ("Alguien Como
Usted"), David Alvarez ("Bongó"), Juan Luis Guerra ("Te Busco") as
well as original material by director and guitarist Guillermo Ruiz
Chirino.
Recommended. (BP)
SONG TITLES:
1. Hasta Que Salga El Sol 2. Un Swing Sabroso 3. Alguien Como Usted
