Although this issue of the Descarga Review was send out yesterday, it  
originated from our "info" account, and it seems that some recipients

EditorsPick: Wow! Here's an unexpected salsa treasure. Two heavy  
hitter Paquitos join forces to create a powerhouse release that has  
the unshakable foundation of pianist and musical director Willie  
"Mundial" Sotelo (Los Protangonistas, La Puertorriqueña etc., etc.)  
at the helm. It's been quite a number of years since veteran singer  
Paquito Guzman has been on the scene - and what a pleasure to have  
him back in the fold. I've never heard him on such a killer salsa  
release as this - even during his tenure with Tommy Olivencia. Man, I  
see him in a whole new light here. Same for Paquito Acosta who, much  
younger than Guzmán, also sang with Olivencia essentially replacing  
Frankie Ruiz. Together Los Dos Paquitos sound unstoppable, with each  
track sounding more pumped then the previous - a brilliant concept  
brought to fruition by producer Luis Dominguez.
Features conguero William "Kachiro" Thompson, bongocero Pucho  
Hernandez, bassist Pedro Perez and other top players. The steel  
girder of coro is made up of Jerry Rivas, Henry Santiago, and Rei  
Peña "El Sonero De La Consola."

EditorsPick: Led by pianist Sergio Rivera, Grupo Caribe has been  
producing first-class salsa since 1996. They have earned the respect  
of not only the dancers but from other musicians as well. Fronted  
here by singers Luisito Ayala, Hermán Olivera and Tito Allen, the  
group continues to solidify their reputation as the standard bearers  
for deeply rooted New York salsa fuerza. It can be said that Grupo  
Caribe evolved from the highly acclaimed Cruz Control led by  
timbalero Ray Cruz. Grupo Caribe members like Rivera, percussionist  
Louis Bauzo and singers Ayala and Olivera all hailed from Cruz  
Control, and they've kept the spirit, drive and, especially, the  
integrity way high.
Terrific arrangements by Ray Santos, Jose Febles, Gil Lopez, Jose  
Madera and others who clearly keep the dancers as their main  
priority. This is the kind of salsa record I can play over and over  
again and never tire of. With tracks like "Saludando", "Homeaje A Los  
Bailadores", "Tambo La Rumba", "Negro De Sociedad", and  
"Bongo" (listen to Louis Bauzo work out on this one) there is zero  
filler material here. Also with bassists Ruben Rodíguez and Willie  
Cintron, sax player Pete Miranda, trombonist Raul Navarrette, and  
others - this one is a big DJ Alert and a salsa lover's Must-Have.  
With good liners by Chico Alvarez Peraza, too.

EditorsPick: From A Different Perspective, the debut CD by La Verdad,  
is pumped with some serious salsa dura. From the opening track "Nueva  
York" (a Frankie Vasquez composition) you can tell that these guys  
mean business. It's produced by Pablo "Chino" Nuñez who also plays  
piano, bass and percussion on this CD. He's joined by singers Frankie  
Vasquez, Willie Ruiz, Willie Torres, and Carlos Rosario who,  
especially on tracks like the killer "Dos Soneros", kick it pretty  
darn hard. From a Different Perspective features mostly original  
dance tracks with a few classic salsa covers like "El  
Todopoderoso" (made famous by Héctor Lavoe) and Eddie Palmieri's "Un  
Dia Bonito" peppered in for good measure.
 From a Different Perspective was recorded in two sessions: one in  
the West Coast where conguero Sean Zuñiga completed his sizzling  
conga solo for "Un Dia Bonito" and José Soto contributed the piano  
parts for the tracks "La Mente" and the fiery "Los Titos". The  
balance of the project, recorded in New York, achieves that "en la  
calle" sensibility that makes these tracks work so well on the  
dancefloor. Deserving a DJ-Alert...

this CD my daughters walked in and immediately started dancing. A  
good sign. Kickin' Congolese rumbas, Zoukous-son and Afro-Cuban

Pio Leiva's Final Tour: Musica Cubana Live In Tokyo - DVD

EditorsPick: Whoa! Hold the press! Once I popped this DVD into the  
player it didn't take long for me to realize the value of what I was  
witnessing. The multi-camera photography, direction and sound quality  
told me that there was a real intelligence behind this production.  
Then I notice that this project was produced by Wim Wenders (as a  
follow-up to his acclaimed documentary Buena Vista Social Club) and  
Claus Clausen of Germany. There's a huge film crew and a top notch  
post-production team. Directors, consultants, legal counsel an more.  
The sound was handled by Termidor, a first-class concern. This  
project was no fly-by night operation.
On to the stage of a jam-packed enthusiastic crowd in a Tokyo club,  
walks some of Cuba's musical royalty: Mayito Rivera, "El Nene" Pedro  
Lugo, Samuel Formell, Tirso Duarte, Luis Frank Arias, Julio Padrón,  
Felicio Arango, Juan "Coto" Antomachin Padilla, the man of the hour -  
the legendary Pio Leiva, as well as the new generation of leading  
edge Cuban musicians: Roberto Carcassés, Osdalgia, rising star  
Telmary, Elmer Ferrer and many others (see the credits below). Live  
in Tokyo turned out to be an absolute gem of a concert - a top notch  
celebration of sizzling música Cubana. The significance of the event  
- held in the unlikely arena of a nightclub filled with adoring  
Japanese Cubanophiles - lies in the unwavering strength and artistry  
of the performances that, without pause, integrate the traditional  
and the cutting edge - the old and new, with a conviction that would  
convert even the most jaded of listeners to frontline soldiers of  
Cuban music. The show's additional significance becomes clear for  
also what it is not: this ain't a bunch of old-time Cuban veteran  
performers recanting their former glory. Yes, there's "Chan Chan",  
but it's a "Chan Chan" like you've never heard it before. The tune,  
like the entire experience here, is transformative. You're left both  
elated and exhausted, and it becomes clear that Cuban music is a  
living, changing thing. In this show, the young stars, like the  
hauntingly beautiful and intense rapper Telmary, are given the space  
they deserve. While Buena Vista Social Club was about Cuba's musical  
past, Live in Tokyo is clearly about it's future. And Leiva seemed  
perfectly fine, no ...pleased, with what was going on. As it turns  
out, it was Leiva's final tour. But, man, what a send off.

EditorsPick: Once again, the Venezuelan supergroup Guaco goes beyond  
notions of what's commercially viable to produce an album of wide  
ranging influences and is actually musically enjoyable - not as a  
lesson in "world music." Their work comes of as almost theater or  
concept pieces, pretty much because sticking to the agenda is so  
important to other bands. These guys are well versed in the language  
of rock, pop, jazz, salsa and folklore. They've no problems taking  
what they need in a composition to make it interesting to themselves.  
Isn't that the idea? Go ahead, try to pigeonhole these guys...

EditorsPick: The latest in a long line of Guaco surprises. Equus  
opens with a pseudo-timba number "Confusión" which, I would guess,  
best describes many a newbie Guaco listener. It also happens to be an  
exceptionally effective powerpunch to the ear. The Guaco fan learns  
to expect the unexpected and to enjoy each track on a case by cases  
basis. "Confusión" may be the only timba number on the CD. Or not.  
"Pa' Ti" an electric guitar based rock number would, I bet, make a  
terrific VH-1 video. Go figure.
The musicans in Guaco are considered by many to be the best of the  
best. And, as such, may just be beyond some of the second guessing  
and "safe" choices made by lesser musicians who might have image issues.
A big fan. Highly Recommended. (BP)

EditorsPick: Direct from the West Coast comes the debut Latin jazz  
release by trumpeter Frank Cano. Frank is joined by legendary  
percussionist Francisco Aguabella on these mostly original tunes -  
the exception being the Jose Fajardo and Justi Barretto composition  
"Ay Que Frio." This is good stuff - the kind of Latin jazz I like to  
hear cruising in my car - journey music. Jams to take you places.  
Listen to Cano's cover tune, the 5-1/2 minute "A Beautiful Day" with  
vocalist Melonie Jackson and flutework by Danilo Lozano. The beauty  
is in it's simplicity of feel. I also very much liked trombonist  
Francisco Torres' composition of "Encanto"; it's a sublime 8 minute  
excursion replete with a bustling rhythm section.
With timbalero Ramon Banda (Poncho Sanchez' band) - listen to him  
rock on the opening track "Validacion". The CD also features sax  
player Anthony Gil, flautist Danilo Lozano (who has performed with  
Cachao, Cuba L.A., Charanga Cubana etc.), bassist Rene Camacho  
(Tabaco y Ron, Bobby Matos, Jack Costanzo etc.) and many others.

EditorsPick: Here's a nice surprise - it'a rich, potent, rootsy tres- 
based Cuban son project from Venezuela. Terrific vocals by the smokey  
voiced Edy J. Ascanio. Tip of the hat, also, to tresero Henry Parra  
who does an exemplary job here. The Tantan cover a nice selection of  
material by the likes of Miguel Matamoros ("El Paralítico"),  
Guillermo Portabales ("El Carretero"), Marcelina Guerra ("Dime La  
Verdad") and many others. It's an understated and soulful gem. Note:  
the cover and liners seem home-printed and inserted. Just an  
observation... doesn't effect the beauty of the music one bit. Listen  
to the haunting piece "La Ruñidera y El Reloj De Pastora" by Ignacio  
Martinez and Arsenio Rodríguez respectively. Essential stuff.

lot. It's perfect radio and club pop salsa with catchy hooks and a  
coro section filled out by Miles Peña, Adolfo Barros, and Miguel  
Martin. Marcos has a fine, clear, tenor voice and keeps the momentum  
flowing with a fresh caché. Excellent arrangements too: made for the  
dancers. The opening track "Equilibrio" is a gem that is offered in  
two flavors: An uptempo salsa and a slower jam as well... it shows  
his range and strength as a vocalist. If your looking for a new,  
young salsero, Marco's your guy. Looking forward to future projects.

absolute gem and should be considered a "must-have."

legendary pianist and composer Bebo Valdés. Pretty major. This fiery  
Latin jazz release seems to be a compilation of mostly original  
tracks that derive from his albums "Herencia" and "La Timba."
Here's Peter Watrous' review of Herencia, from 2004:
"One of Chucho Valdes' sons runs the show from the piano; he's a good  
player, occasionally throwing in modernist flashes of harmony. This  
is a straight up descarga record, recorded on mostly acoustic  
instruments. There's an occasional dip into fusiony Irakere writing
