JACK COSTANZO
Latin Percussion With Soul w/Gerrie Woo (very limited quantities)
Tico
Originally released: 1968
Category: LATIN SOUL/BOOGALOO; LATIN SOUL, CLASSIC 60s or 70s
EditorsPick: **Classics Revisited**
Jack Costanzo, a.k.a. Mr. Bongo, was signed to make this one-off
album for Tico Records after the label's A & R man Pancho Cristal saw
him perform with a seven-piece group at the El San Juan Hotel in
Puerto Rico. Cristal hired the talented New York-based pianist,
composer, arranger, bandleader and producer Héctor Rivera (1933-2006)
to arrange the songs he and Jack selected for the project. However,
when Héctor arrived in Los Angeles to conduct the recording date by
Jack's approximately 14-piece ensemble, he had only arranged his own
compositions and none of the agreed selections. An enormous row
ensued, but the session went ahead under Héctor's direction and Jack
admits to this day that he was "a marvellous arranger". Personnel
include Costanzo regulars Eddie Cano on piano and trumpeter Paul
López (who clocked-up seven albums with Mr Bongo) together with
former La Sonora Matancera bass player Humberto Cané. It is more than
likely that Tico were hoping to emulate Joe Cuba's 1966 pop and R&B
chart success with Latin Percussion With Soul, but it didn't happen.
Jack's wife at the time, Gerrie Woo, sings on the most dispensable of
the dated crossover tracks. There are only three, or possibly four of
these, the rest of the material comprises of swinging mambos and
fusion a la Mongo replete with solos and a guajira; the highlights
being the Héctor Rivera compositions "Recuerdos", "Mambo Jack",
"Mantequilla" and "Que Vengo Acabando", Booker T's "Green Onions" and
the Nat Adderly standard "Jive Samba". Jack remade "Mantequilla" and
"Jive Samba" for his 2001 CuBop debut CD Back from Havana and "Green
Onions" for the 2002 follow-up Scorching The Skins.
Recommended. (John Child)

GENE HERNANDEZ
El Sabor De Gene (very limited quantities)
Alegre
Originally released: 1981
Reissued: 1999
Category: SALSA/SON; SALSA
EditorsPick: **Classics Revisited**
After performing with Típica Novel, Orquesta Broadway (for whom he
wrote the classic "Isla del Encanto") and Charanga América, Gene
Hernández (a.k.a. Eugenio Hernández) headed-up his own band Novedades
on a trio of albums for Alegre between 1978 and 1981: Gene Hernández
y Novedades con Amor, Inspiraciones and El Sabor de Gene. Luis
"Perico" Ortiz produced the latter two, but it's the third, El Sabor
de Gene, that really does it for me. And I thank Ray Rosado (Wayne
Gorbea's longtime collaborator, arranger, composer, percussionist and
coro singer) for rekindling my interest in the album. Novedades
started with a fairly strict charanga lineup on Novedades con Amor,
was augmented by Perico's trumpet on Inspiraciones, then blossomed
into a glorious charanga / brass amalgam on El Sabor de Gene with not
only Perico's trumpet but also three trombones. The outstanding
opening track "El Viejo Barbero", arranged by Joe Mannozzi, builds to
an exciting La Perfecta-esque trombanga climax. Ray recommends the
cuts "La Cama Rota", with a Perico arrangement reminiscent of his
work with Willie Colón and featuring Victor Maldonado on bongo and
Jimmy Delgado on timbales, and "Cancion de Amor", understatedly
arranged by Mannozzi. Gene disbanded Novedades shortly after El Sabor
de Gene and disappeared from the NYC recording scene. However, he
recently resurfaced as a guest on Orquesta Broadway's CD 40th
Anniversary '03 on Flauta. Incidentally, Victor also played on
Inspiraciones and in 2001 he and Ray co-founded the band Maña whose
debut album Con Maña Se Puede! is in progress. Oh, as if it isn't
already self-evident, El Sabor de Gene is highly recommended. (John
Child)

Alegre
Reissued: 1995
Category: DANCE TRADITIONS; BIG BAND MAMBO JAZZ
EditorsPick: For the collectors only! Old stock found. Out of print!
Very limited supply! (BP)
Description: The vocals are supposed to be Chivirico Davila's, but a
technical error in re-mastering resulted in the use of Bobby Escoto's
voice on this CD. Bobby was the original pick for the vocals, but was
scrapped for Chivirico on the original LP. So, this CD is sort of a
collector's item.

JOHNNY RIVERA AND THE TEQUILA BRASS
Up, Up And Away (very limited quantities)
Cotique
Originally released: 1968
Reissued: 2004
Category: LATIN SOUL/BOOGALOO; LATIN SOUL, CLASSIC 60s or 70s
EditorsPick: This 1968 boogaloo record by timbalero bandleader Johnny
Rivera is a lot of fun. Like all good boogaloo records of the era,
this one is complete with great grooves and insipid lyrics
("...You're waiting for the other guy-ay,ay"), but fun in spite, or
because, of this. Nice jala-jala like track "Jalco." Good job all
around by vocalist George Villanueva. Recommended. (BP)
SONG TITLES:
1. Johnny On The Warpath 2. The Clown 3. Jalco 4. Light My Fire 5.
Cloud Nine 6. Peyote 7. I'm So Lonely 8. Without A Song 9. Conformidad

Dawn (Amanecer) (very limited quantities)
Vaya
Originally released: 1977
Reissued: 2004
Category: LATIN JAZZ; LATIN JAZZ
EditorsPick: What a great, funky, 1977 New York session this was!
With Mongo in top form, this jazzy groove-saturated gem features
smart original compositions arrangements by Marty Sheller, Bill
O'Connell, Bob Porcelli and others. There's also one of the best
conga-driven versions of Manteca (Chano Pozo/Dizzy GIllespie) on
record. Mr. Santamaria is a simply a giant on this. Dawn also
features Steve Berrios, Julito Collazo, Mike Di Martino and other top
players. It's mostly instrumental, with the welcomed exception of Joe
Gallardo's pristine and ethereal "Amanecer" which features Rubén
Baldes and Adalberto Santiago on vocals. Wow.
A classic. Highly Recommended. (BP)
