MARC ANTHONY
El Cantante: Music From And Inspired By The Original Motion Picture
Sony Norte
Originally released: 2007
Category: SALSA/SON; SALSA
EditorsPick: Yes, the movie is just around the corner and Lavoe-mania
- or at least the marketing - intensifies. Here are inspired
interpretations of classic Héctor Lavoe material for the upcoming,
highly anticipated, film of Lavoe's life staring Marc Anthony and
Jennifer López. Produced by Sergio George (also on piano here), the
music features heavy hitters like Rauz Agraz, Marc Quiñones, Bobby
Allende, Reynaldo Jorge and Luis Quintero. Mr. Anthony did his
homework, and does a highly credible job here, straddling the
difficult line between interpretation and imitation. On the whole, he
is victorious: the music is highly satisfying, with enough subtlety
and nuance that make it very much worth the while. Very finely
produced by Sergio George: lavish, but not over-the-top. Also
participating are some legends that performed with Lavoe on the
original tracks: Jose Mangual Jr., Milton Cardona and Yomo Toro.
Includes the bonus track "Toma de Mi": a previous unreleased song
written by Julio Reyes Copello and Nelly Furtado and sung by Jennifer
López.
Highly Recommended. (BP)

ARTURO SANDOVAL
Live At The Hotel Nacional, Havana 1986 2-CD Set
Yemayá Records (original import)
Originally released: 1986
Reissued: 2007
Category: LATIN JAZZ; AFRO-CUBAN JAZZ; CUBA
EditorsPick: Review to follow shortly. (BP)
Description: "Trumpet great Arturo Sandoval formed his own band
immediately after leaving Irakere in 1981. He was extremely lucky to
find sympathetic sidemen of the highest caliber. His group included
such outstanding figures as bassist Jorge Reyes, guitarist Jorge Luis
Chicoy (both of which would later join Irakere during the 90's) and
pianist Hilario Duran (who currently resides in Canada and works as a
soloist). The virtuosity of his sidemen allowed Sandoval's shoes to
take on a group focus, as opposed to a band which was formed to
simply support Sandoval's individual genius."
- Maria Elena Mendiola, 2006.

1. "Artro Sandoval En Concierto Vol. I" 2. Nuestro Blues (4:12) 3.

CAÑA SANTA
Sonero 100%
Egrem (original import)
Originally released: 2003
Category: SALSA/SON; SON, GUARACHA, GUAJIRA; CUBA
EditorsPick: Caña Santa, is an excellent young Cuban band that is
helping to maintain the son tradition of dance music. On this rich,
soulful project, they enlist some heavy-hitters as special guests:
vocalist Juan De Marcos Gonzalez (Afro-Cuban All Stars), Eliades
Ochoa (Buena Vista Social Club), Pedrito Calvo (formerly of Los Van
Van), pianists Cesar Pedroso "Pupy," and Manolito Simonet. Not bad, eh?
Recommended. (BP)

LA CARO BAND
Cola Lok
Egrem (original import)
Originally released: 2005
Category: SALSA/SON; SALSA CUBANA; CUBA
EditorsPick: One of the weirder groups to come out of Cuba, La Caro
Band is also one of my favorites. The band's three sisters sing
against a timba-esque background, with lots of call and response. The
coros of the sisters are almost rapped, and there's so much strange
originality to the group that it's hard not to love it. And it has an
instantly identifiable sound. That said, this isn't the best recorded
or mixed album I've ever heard, which is too bad, because the group
deserves better. They clearly have a ton of fun, and the whole thing
sounds like some bizarre experiment cooked up in the country. Not
everything's in tune, either, but who cares? This is unmitigated
nutty joy.
Recommended. (Peter Watrous)

SONG TITLES:
1. Cola Lok (4:43) 2. Es Tarde Ya (5:24) 3. No Te Pases (4:49) 4.
Cosas De Fiestas (5:07) 5. Busca Tu Verdad (2:50) 6. Enamoradas
Perdidas (6:00) 7. Bésame (6:11) 8. No Sufro (6:06) 9. Qué De Mí

EL CLAN
Ese Soy Yo
JMI (original import)
Category: POP/OTHER; POP LATIN; CUBA
EditorsPick: Last heard of as Carlos Manuel's back up group (until he
jumped ship in Mexico), the Clan is back. It's not exactly timba
they're selling today, but some sort of pan-Caribbean Latin music,
meant for a party and mostly for the background of a party, too. The
singing sounds like Cuban soul, the sort you might hear on a Charanga
Habanera record. There are hints of merengue, piano figures that
could be from the Dominican Republic, also, or from timbaland. There
are rhythms that sound a bit like music from Martinique and
Guadeloupe, and it's all really well made.
Recommended. (Peter Watrous)

SONG TITLES:
1. Me Tiene Cansao 2. Que Bien, Que Bien 3. Tu Con Nada Y Yo Contigo
4. Atado 5. Donde Estas Mi Lola 6. Ese Soy Yo 7. Esto Esta Bueno 8.

JUAN CARLOS ALFONSO Y SU DAN DEN
Pasión
Egrem (original import)
Originally released: 2004
Category: SALSA/SON; SALSA CUBANA; CUBA
EditorsPick: Dan Den has its own sound, based around the instantly
identifiable keyboard figures of Alfonso, repeating, shuffling, and
always moving the rhythm forward. Pasión is a nice little record,
featuring the singers Barbarita Fernandez and Dayron Martin, and once
the coros and breaks kick in everything sounds good. Like the
majority of new Cuban records Pasion isn't suffering from the highest
fi, but that's also the price of admission.
Recommended. (Peter Watrous)

KLIMAX
Oye Como Va
Eurotropical (original import)
Originally released: 2000
Category: SALSA/SON; SALSA CUBANA; CUBA
EditorsPick: Giraldo Piloto and his Klimax are back with a strong,
mostly timba, release that furthers the argument that Cuba is the
shining star of the new Latin music. "Regalo De Amor" starts off as a
straight enough romantic number that somehow lost its way and decided
to become a party version of "Tin Marin" (remember the Ricardo Ray
and Bobby Cruz' classic?). Interesting but coincidental is the timely
release of the title cut "Oye Como Va" which comes to us just after
the death of El Rey, Tito Puente.
Highly Recommended. (original review date: August, 2000) (BP)

MI GENTE
Aquí Sí Roncan Los Cueros
Presto (original import)
Originally released: 2005
Category: SALSA/SON; SALSA CUBANA; CUBA
EditorsPick: Recorded in 2004, the album's a salsa release from Cuba.
When the coros kick in the music starts moving. The band's trombone
heavy, and the music's polished. The leader Tony Rodriguez splits the
vocals with Mandy Caceres, the bassist.
Recommended. (Peter Watrous)

HAILA MOMPIE
Haila Live!
BIS (original import)
Originally released: 2003
Category: SALSA/SON; SALSA CUBANA; CUBA
EditorsPick: Drawing from her body of dynamic work with Bamboleo,
Azucar Negra and her recent, very successful, solo CD tribute to
Celia Cruz, Ms. Mompie demonstrates that she can easily handle the
title of solo artist in a live arena. On this recording, recorded en
vivo at the Teatro Nacional de Cuba in May of 2002, she grabs each
arrangement by the collar and makes it swing. Special guests Issac
Delgado, Mayito Rivera, Chucho Valdés, and David Calzado y La
Charanga Habanera make this one a very special concert. Quality
engineering, with fine sound.
Highly recommended. (BP)

SONG TITLES:

MIGUELITO VALDES
Mambo Dance Session: Historical 1949 Recordings
Caribe Classics
Originally released: 1949
Reissued: 1994
Category: DANCE TRADITIONS; BIG BAND MAMBO JAZZ; CUBA
EditorsPick: "During the late 1940s Miguelito Valdés led a big band
featuring the likes of Eddie Cano, Al Escobar, "Little Ray" Romero,
Modesto Calderón, Sonny Rivera; René Hernández and Dámaso Pérez Prado
did much of the writing. All of this talent complements Miguelito's
stupendous vocals. Producer Henry Medina has drawn upon the best
available source material for remastering. Let this be an example to
reissue producers." (David M. Carp, 98/99 Catalog)
"Big band sound of Mr. Babalu (not Desi Arnaz) and his
orchestra." (Joe Conzo, 96/97 Catalog)
"These are, as the cover states, historic 1949 recordings compiled by
musicologist, historian, collector and film and video archivist,
Henry Medina, Jr. It's a big band with its own sound. Terrific

Macho and Bauza." (Al Santiago, 96/97 Catalog) (BP)
