magnificently gifted singer and a magnetically attractive performer.  
Not for nothing is he called 'The Elegant One', because he has the  
smoothest, truest, warmest voice of the many salseros singing today,"  
wrote my Aracataca colleague Tomek in 1995... The top-of-the-range  
lineup here is a veritable big band with a brass section bulging with  
trumpets, trombones and saxes, including such luminaries as  
trumpeters Puchi Boulong and Ray Maldonado, trombonists Papo Vásquez  
and Sam Burtis, and sax players Mario Rivera and Bobby Porcelli, plus  
a rhythm section sporting the likes of bassist Eddie "Gua Gua"  
Rivera, timbalero Mike Collazo and conguero Papo Pepin. Solos abound  
without compromising the dance groove, for instance, Maldonado's  
trumpet blazes on "Dame Tu Amor Morenita" and Pastor takes a nice  
jazz inflected solo on "Algun Dia".
...Definitely an essential purchase.

in top form. Though the album garnered a Grammy nomination, it  
suffered from poor airplay at the time of its release, mainly because  
of the controversy aroused by Rubén's composition "Tiburón". Twenty- 
five years later, this masterful production continues to stand up on  
all levels.

EditorsPick: This is a classic album by one of Cuba's great and  
underrated soneros. His band, which continued recording after his  
death, scorches through Potaje and Rumba Pa' Los Rumberos. The only  
frustrating thing is that these songs are so short. Still, Faz and  
his boy pack a lot of timba into those couple of minutes, as you'll

EditorsPick: This is one of the best pachanga recordings of the early  
'60s. It was originally released on the Columbia or United Artists  
label (if I'm not mistaken), and was obviously recorded in a quality  
studio with a good engineer, because I remember the sound as being  
outstandingly crisp and clean. The instrumentation is interesting  
also. It's a charanga rhythm section, with flute, but utilizing  
trumpets instead of the traditional violins. There are no weak tracks  
on this album; from the beginning to end, it's nothing but solid  
swing. This is the album where Paquito Guzman sings his well-known  
version of 'Yo Soy El Son Cubano.' (Henry Fiol)

Barretto's salsa orchestra in 1972 and had undergone a number of  
changes by the time they recorded Charangueando in the summer of 1978  
(though not issued by Fania until 1980). One of my favourite Típica  
albums, the project has a wonderfully loose quality and is packed  
with solos from the band's virtuoso personnel. Very Highly
