JOHNNY RAY (JOHNNY ZAMOT)
Las Estrellas De Nueva York: Camino De Fama (Walk Of Fame) - Descarga
Salsa Jazz
JZ
Originally recorded: early-mid '70s
Reissued: 2007
Category: SALSA/SON; SALSA: CLASSIC 1960s or 1970s NEW YORK
EditorsPick: Here's something pretty darn remarkable. A never-before
issued album of sessions directed by the venerated Charlie Palmieri.
Conguero and bandleader Johnny Zamot (also known as Johnny Ray)
brought together a crew of young musicians who would later become
legendary figures in their own right: trombonists Barry Rogers and
Jose Meriño, bongocero Johnny Rodriguez "Dandy," pianist Eddie "Eddy"
Martinez, trumpeters Ray Maldonado, and Ray Roman, timbalero Manny
Corchado, bassists Victor Venegas and Eddie "Gua Gua" Rivera, drummer
Billy Cobham, tresero Charlie Rodriguez and, yes, many others.
These are raw-energy studio sessions that convey the sense of working
musicians letting loose in ways similar to Al Santiago's famed Alegre
All Stars (also with Charlie P. at the helm). It's music made to
satisfy the musicians playing it; proficient, intense, and swinging
*very* hard. According to John Child, some of the tracks appeared on
the rare early '70s album entitled Johnny Zamot.
Zamot chose what he felt were the best tracks from several sessions
when assembling this CD. He put all the descarga-heavy tracks up
front: "Oye Nicola," "La Guerra" "Descarga En Tres," the over 7
minute "Descarga No. 2" and, of course, "Descarga Zamot." There are
also some jazzy numbers that drip with Latin soul, and the finale,
"Guadalajara," is a tour-de force theatrical powerhouse that one can
imagine being used as the centerpiece in a Latin version of the
musical Hair.
With singers John "PeeWee" Fernandez and Ramon "Tito Jay" Jimenez and
a coro team consisting of Yayo "El Indio," Adalberto Santiago and
Jimmy Sabater. Pretty cool, indeed. Camino de Fama is one of those
rare releases that seem to come out of nowhere, yet assert a
historical reference to remind us that exceptional work was done
outside of the Fania studios as well. Musically, what an amazing
period the '70s was.
Good liner notes by Nelson Rodríguez. This one, folks, is a Must-
Have. Very Highly Recommended. (BP)

PABLO "CHINO" NUÑEZ
Doctor Salsa - Chino Nuñez, Vol. 2
Infamous
Originally released: 2007
Category: SALSA/SON; SALSA
EditorsPick: You want the salsa? Can you handle the salsa? Here is
the salsa! After his power-punch It's SHO Time ('05), we wondered if
Chino Nuñez could possibly return with a project of equal propulsion.
Well folks, the Doctor is in the house, and he's got the cure. If
this one doesn't get them dancing, there just ain't no pulse. With
singers Hector Papote Jimenez (who's currently featured on the
acclaimed Zon Del Barrio cd), Ray Viera, Carlos Rosario, Rey
Sepulveda, Tony Perez, Jose Papo Rivera and Yoko Mimata, Doctor Salsa
seems always on the verge of eruption. And Nuñez' timbales, of
course, do not escape unscathed. Listen to him make them scream for
mercy on the commanding opening track "Te Invita." This boy can play:
pure salsa sparks. And listen to Jose Papo Rivera's handling of Julio
Cueva's steamroller "Permiteme Soñar" - a treasure that leads into
"Aveces," a composition by Héctor Luis Pagán. This album highlight
features Spanish Harlem Orchestra veterans Raul Agraz and Peter
Nater, helping to make it the salsa monster it is. Other
participating musicians are trumpeter Richie Viruet, bone player Luis
Bonilla, pianist Edwin Sanchez, conguero Willie Romero and first-
class coroistas Frankie Vasquez, Eddie Rosado, Willie Ruiz, and
Chuito De Jesus.
Complaints? The 40-1/2 minutes of Doctor Salsa goes by way too fast.
A big DJ Alert. Zero filler. A salsa lovers must-have.
Very Highly Recommended. (BP)

JOHNNY BLAS & HIS LATIN JAZZ
Indestructible Spirit
CuBop
Originally released: 2007
Category: LATIN JAZZ; LATIN JAZZ
EditorsPick: What an intriguing Latin jazz project - his first
release since his '99 King Conga. On this one, Mr. Blas, known for
his strong conga playing, also picks up the soprano sax for "Afro-
Rican" - a return to his first instrument. You'll hear all original
material here, mostly written by Blas. I like the funky, somewhat off-
kilter, feel of "Puerto Rico Rico," a track that features a cuatro
interlude by Jeff Hawley. These are unique, tumbao-driven,
compositions that use some traditional Afro-Cuban protocols as
springboards to venture into less traveled territory. The over 9
minute Dan Weinstein composition "Barry Rogers" - an homage to the
great trombonist, surprisingly, doesn't feature a trombone. Instead,
Ray Zepeda articulates the melancholy via soprano sax. Don't expect
business as usual here. These are original vision pieces that, at
times, take a turn for the strange. In the case of "Indestructible
Spirit," the turn is even eerie. It's a good segue into the more
upbeat, two-trombone "Boogaloo Blas." Blas is peculiar ...in a good
way; He's clearly not interested in rehash. We could use a few more
like him.
Highly Recommended. (BP)

MAURICIO SMITH JR.
Together Again
Majusi Productions
Originally released: 2007
Category: LATIN JAZZ; LATIN JAZZ
EditorsPick: Here's a terrific Latin jazz record by flute and sax
player Mauricio Smith Jr., son of the respected flutist and composer.
Pretty big shoes to fill, as the late Mauricio Smith Sr. played
alongside some of Latin music royalty: Willie Colón, Joe Cuba, Mongo
Santamaria, Dizzy Gillespie, Patato, Jimmy Bosch, etc. etc.. On this
album, Smith Jr. interprets some of his father's compositions such as
"Madera" and "Together Again." He's joined by bassists Maximo
Rodriguez and Rubén Rodriguez, pianists Igor Atalita and Roberto
Pérez, timbalero Jose Papo Boine and others, who take on Cal Tjader's
"Sabor," Miles Davis' "Seven Steps to Heaven," "Obsesion" the Rafael
Hernández classic and Marcelino Thompson's "Lluvia." Smith can
certainly make his flute dance. Listen to his adept handling of
"Total," the guaracha-jazz that features singer Orlando Aviles. There
are two pretty spectacular bonus tracks: "Cast Your Fate to the
Wind" (Vince Guaraldi and Carel Werver) and "Maquina" (Smith Sr.) -
these are from a different session that featured Sal Cuevas on bass,
Papo Pepin on congas, violinist Alfredo De La Fe and drummer Robbie
Ameen. And man, these tracks simply drip with sabor.
Highly Recommended. (BP)

SEXTETO LATINO MODERNO
Al Acecho - De Colombia Para El Mundo
Sexteto Latino (original import)
Originally released: 2007
Category: SALSA/SON; SALSA COLOMBIA; COLOMBIA
EditorsPick: Produced by German Villareal, who's also guest
percussionist on Al Acecho, this spirited vibes-based salsa-jazz
release from Colombia swings. There are original tracks like the
sublime "El Swing De Mi Barrio" and "Rico y Melodióso" - both
composed by pianist and musical director Yasser Aguancha, as well as
interpretations of Tito Puente's "Picadillo," Dizzy Gillespie's "A
Night In Tunisia" and Duke Ellington's "In a Sentimental Mood." And
Sexteto Latino Moderno does justice to Louie Ramirez' timbale anthem
"El Títere." And there is an especially jazzy interpretation of
Moises Simon's "El Manicero" that really gets the juices flowing.
With timbalero Carlos Portilla, vibist Cesar Castillo, Christian
Salazar on bass, and others. Also with singers Luis Zapata and
Renaldo Gordon.
Colombia continues to walk the walk. Highly Recommended. (BP)

BLACK SUGAR SEXTET
Estamos Azucar...! Lucho Cueto Presents Black Sugar Sextet
Latin Sound Records
Originally released: 2007
Category: SALSA/SON; SALSA
EditorsPick: High expectations percolated for months before the
release of Estamos Azucar...!, the debut release of the New York
based Black Sugar Sextet led by veteran salsa pianist Lucho Cueto,
whose phone-book sized resume lists names like Azuquita, Jimmy
Delgado, Imagen and Junior Gonzalez. The project turned out to be a
dynamic vibes-based salsa and Latin jazz project that, at times,
conjures the spirit of Son Boricua, another band that Cueto has been
a part of. Son Boricua's founder, José Mangual Jr., is one of the
many vocalists with Black Sugar, some of the others being Tito Allen,
Willie Amadeo, Joe King and Maximo Rodriguez. There are special
guests too: vibes/marimba player Dave Samuels, flautist Dave
Valentin, and singer Kim De Los Santos who does a fine job on the
title track "Estamos Azucar." Mike Freeman does a superb job on
vibes, and the heavy-duty percussion parts are driven by Luisito
Quintero (timbales), Roberto Quintero (congas, batá) and bongocero
Carlito Soto. Listen to them go to task on "Pa' Colombia Entera," and
the jazzy Roberto Quintero composition "Descarga Azucar." The band
also takes on the classic Fania All Star's "Anacaona" (Tite Curet
Alonso), one of two bonus tracks. Also with bassist Jose Tabares.
Highly Recommended. (BP)

RAY VIERA
Trombao
Ray Viera
Originally released: 2007
Category: SALSA/SON; SALSA
EditorsPick: "Trombao" is right. Funky trombones are all over the
place on this sumptuous new salsa release by singer Ray Viera.
Harkening back to Eddie Palmieri's La Perfecta, Viera makes superb
use of the trombones' power of persuasion. Viera, who has worked with
Palmieri (La Perfecta II), Los Soneros Del Barrio, George Delgado and
Chino Nuñez, wrote all of the compositions on Trombao with the
exception of Pedro Brunet's classic "Tratame Como Soy," which he
handles with great savvy. Listen to the three trombones weave a
blustery wave of sound in that track. There's somthing about the
power of multiple trombones that's pretty darn stunning.
The rich heritage of classic salsa, particularly the Fania
sensibility, has clearly helped to define Viera's aesthetic. With
titles like "Son , Guaracha, y Guaguanco," the cuatro spiced "Un Niño
Jibaro En La Ciudad," and "Mi Montuno Monte Adentro" you could easily
be reading the back of a vintage Roberto y Su Nuevo Montuno album.
And Viera enlisted veterans Marty Sheller, Luis Cruz and Jose Madera
for the arrangements: some serious talent. And Viera can rock the
house. Listen to his handling of the dynamic "Valluna Mando Caleña,"
or his robust attack on "Oracion Al Padre Celestial." And on Richie
Viruet's arrangement of "Cancion Pa' Abuelito," Viera lets completely
loose. On this track, the trombones break out with moña madness. It's
the essence of classic salsa, here and now...
Very Highly Recommended. (BP)

ZON DEL BARRIO
Cortijo's Tribe - La Tribu De Cortijo
Universal/Protel
Originally released: 2007
Category: SALSA/SON; SALSA
EditorsPick: Zon Del Barrio's debut release is a fervent celebration
of Puerto Rican salsa and, in particular, the intelligence, swing and
spirit of the legendary band Cortijo y Su Combo and their vocalist,
the great sonero Ismael Rivera. This dance party supreme features
Cortijo compositions like "El Chivo," "El Negro Bembón," and "Quitate
de la Via, Perico" as well as original tracks that serve to enhance
the tribute. Guest singer Sammy Ayala, who contributed three
compositions, adds old school flavor and authenticity to an already
top-notch project. And legendary cuatrista Yomo Toro also graces
Cortijo's Tribe. Young singer Hector "Papote" Jimenez handles the
material with flair and authority: listen to his handling of the
fiery "Gulliver." Clearly, bandleader and percussionist Aurora Flores
knows the music inside and out - she's able to channel the essential
Cortijo here: The fresh new version of "Tuntuneco," which originally
appeared on Cortijo's Bueno...y Qué?, sounds as if he's, somehow, at
the helm. Flores also peppers in a bit of bomba y plena, Puerto Rican
roots music that Cortijo helped to popularize. It makes sense, and
helps to establish the musical heritage. With liner notes by
musicologist Rene López.
Highly Recommended. (BP)

K-OBA
Salsa Tropical
K-Oba
Originally released: 2007
Category: SALSA/SON; SALSA
EditorsPick: A true Calí-Miami collaboration. Get past the budget-
minded cover and you'll find yourself dancing to some of best, fresh
and feverish, salsa out there right now. Opening with a blistering
"Ya No Creo En Ti," young singer Ralphy Ray takes the song by the
collar and doesn't let go. This guy is good, as is second singer
Ricardo Lasso Mancilla, who handles "El Ilegal" and "Retorno Caleño"
with a svelte proficiency. The arrangements, by pianist Juan Chunga,
Elmer Daza and Isbel Chamizo, are crisp and to the point. Check out
the infectious "Asi Naci," a favorite that seems to be written
especially for singer Ralphy Ray who kicks it into gear early on. No-
nonsense, zero-filler salsa.
K-Oba ends the album with "Ofelia, Cumbia Mix," flexing the Colombian
muscle. It's a good exclamation point to a concise, tightly packed,
salsa splash. DJ Alert, and Highly Recommended. (BP)
