TITO PUENTE
The Tito Puente Roast - DVD
Presented by Joe Quijano
Cesta
Originally released: 1979
Reissued: 2007
Category: DVD; PERFORMANCE
EditorsPick: "In 1979, I produced a live show for Tito Puente and His
Orchestra, for the purpose of promoting him to a wider television
audience. We came up with the idea of starting a Tito Puente
Scholarship Fund and incorporating it into "The Tito Puente Roast."
The show was filmed at MTI Studios in NYC with renowned scenic
designer, Douglas S. Paddock. Many personalities attended and
participated in this grand event. They were Grace Pérez Quijano, Raul
Davila, Herb McQuade, Ronnie Puente (Tito Puente's son), Eduardo
Olmos, Orlando Marin, Al Santiago, Polito Vega (Announcer), Charlie
Palmieri, Bobby Capo, Felipe Luciano, Ray Barretto, Ralph Mercado,
Raul Marrero, Bill Beauchamp. Izzy Sanabria, Marcos Rosales, Tony
Martinez, Cindy Rodriguez (Tito Rodriguez' daughter), Eddie Palmieri,
Palph Lew, Jose Curbelo, Roger Dawson, Myrta Silva, Papo Estrada, Joe
Conzo, Federico Pagani, Catalino Rolon, Paco Navarro (Announcer),
Margie Puente (Tito Puente's wife), and the Tito Puente Orchestra.
The event took place on April 30, 1979. The filming turned out to be
exciting and successful since the roasting to Tito Puente was
recorded in front of a live audience.
I want to thank the writers, the roasters, the musicians, all of the
supporters, and most of all my former wife who believed in my
endeavors. The show is 99% in English, proving that many Latinos
dominated the language of Shakespeare, mixing it up with "Spanglish."
Please sit back and enjoy this piece of musical history.

- Gracias, Joe Quijano.

"Legendary musician, vocalist, record producer and bandleader Joe
Quijano has managed to capture a piece of musical history. With the
technical help of Luis "Perico" Ortiz, Joe has restored what everyone
thought were the lost tapes from the 1979 "Tito Puente Roast." This
event was a black tie affair held in honor of the most popular Latin
bandleader of his time. Featured on this DVD are three classic "live"
performances by the maestro and his orchestra, laced together with
testimonials and jokes by some of the greatest musicians that ever
performed Afro-Cuban music. Thanks to the efforts of Joe, a brand new
generation of Hispanic-Caribbean-Americans may now fully appreciate
Tito's innovative efforts. It is a fitting tribute to one of New
York's own, a true American legend."

- Chico Alvarez

"The Tito Puente Roast is a fascinating social document of both its
subject and New York's Latin music establishment in the early 1980s.
Joe Quijano has to be commended for preserving and now releasing this
material on DVD; it's a must for collectors and serious students of
the music."

GILBERTO SANTA ROSA
Contraste 2-CD Set
Sony BMG Norte
Originally released: 2007
Category: SALSA/SON; SALSA
EditorsPick: The title refers to the fact that the album comes with
two cds, one of salsa, the other titled popbalada. Not exactly the
White Album, but still, a feat, because every Santa Rosa album is
just that, a feat of singing. The salsa album is smooth and old-
school, with well-arranged coros sounding like vocal groups, and
perfect breaks. At times it's hard not to ask for more: the music
seems overly controlled, salsa at its least explosive, perfectly
constructed but not always persuasive. But then, Santa Rosa enters,
reminding us that he's one of the finest singers in the history of
the music, liquid and rhythmic at the same time, a master of the
distinct phrase. All over his soneos, there's brilliance, with Santa
Rosa playing with time, with repetition, with rhyme, with the sound
of consonants.
The pop album - and there are plenty that'd argue that Santa Rosa's
soft salsa is pop - takes the singer into the heavy breathing of an
older style of pop, one where the modern world doesn't intrude.
There's lots of quivering notes, even wah-wah guitar. It's so overly
emotional at times it seems like a parody. Still, it's perfectly
done, and those for whom this was made will like it.
Highly Recommended. (Peter Watrous)

KIMBOMBO ORQUESTA
El Nuevo Sonido De La Salsa
JKH (original import)
Originally released: 2007
Category: SALSA/SON; SALSA COLOMBIA; COLOMBIA
EditorsPick: It takes about three seconds to hear that Kimbombo has
pulled off a wild, tough session. The band, from Ibague, Colombia
jumps right up with hard, swinging salsa that is perfect for the
dancefloor. On "Tributo a Barranquilla," the band takes a tune from
Cuba's NG La Banda and gives it new words, adding percussion breaks
and new rhythms. This sounds like a road band to me, no frills and
ready to please, with a horn section anchored by a baritone
saxophone, just the sort of thing Colombian bands are good at, and
the reason that Colombian releases are always pushing into best
recordings of the year.

Category: FOLKLORIC; RUMBA and/or SANTERIA/LUCUMI; CUBA
EditorsPick: Just in! New Lucumí release from the Ballet Folklórico
Cutumba de Santiago.
Highly Recommended.
This recording was produced with the idea of helping students of the
Orisha dance to deepen their understanding of the music and develop
more confidence and independence. The tracks consist of commonly
heard toques with clearly defined transitions. For example, Elegguá
follows a very simple progression from La Topa to Ynongo to
Chachalokuafun. After learning the distinct steps and figures of each
toque, dancers can develop their own choreographies and thoroughly
enjoy "danzando para los Orishas."

CONJUNTO MANGUAL
Abril En Paris
Lujoso / Buyu
Originally released: 2007
Category: SALSA/SON; SALSA
EditorsPick: Wow, this is the stuff to clear away the blues of the
oncoming winter. José Mangual Jr. sings, and the whole session has
that perfect feel of a session that just went off well. As it should:
Milton Cardona's on coro, the Manguals take over the percussion
section, Victor Santos is on piano, Landy Felix is on bass, and Jose
Peña's on tres. The music, típico son salsa, just cooks from the
beginning to the end; it's loose and funky and hard all at the same
time. And it's from New York, with José Mangual making references to
record stores and other places. On "Apoya La," he asks us all to buy
the music, to help the music. Which is not only a good idea, but when
faced with buying an album like this, that harkens back to the glory
days of New York as a center for Latin music, a pretty easy thing to
do. Let's hope the Manguals make another record this good, but quick.
Highly Recommended. (Peter Watrous)

SEXTETO RUMBAHABANA
Mimi Pinzón
Melodias (original import)
Originally released: 2007
Category: SALSA/SON; SON, GUARACHA, GUAJIRA; COLOMBIA
EditorsPick: Yet another good Colombian release. For a while the
Colombians were making music that was more Puerto Rican than music
made in Puerto Rico. Here's they're picking on Cuban son, and doing a
good job of it, also. Straightforward and ebullient, the band sounds
like it's having a great time, swinging and light, with good singing
and good trumpet playing. The tres motors along, and like all the
best son recordings, there's a bit of pressure, like the whole
thing's going pop with excitement. Good song choices with tunes by
Ñico Saquito, Ignacio Pineiro, Luis Marquetti, Don Felo and more;
good playing. (Comes with bonus DVD disc video of the title track
"Mimi Pinzón.")

GENE PERRY
Mi Tambor Lo Dice Todo
Masakote Music
Originally released: 2007
Category: SALSA/SON; SALSA
EditorsPick: Great little indie burner from the Left Coast, featuring
a band run by the percussionist Perry, originally from Puerto Rico.
And just check out his playing: over a montuno on "Agua Que va a
Caer," Perry lets his hands go. The lead singer, Joaquin McWhinney,
best known as a reggae singer from San Diego, does a good job, and
the band, including Harry Kim, Justo Almario and Arturo Velasco on
horns can really move. Tons of instrumental breaks, also, with bata
drums, played by Mark Lamson, showing up over a a piano figure for an
extended solo. This is dance music at its best, by musicians and for
both dancers and listeners.

MARC ANTHONY
El Cantante - The Movie DVD
Based On The Life Of Salsa Legend Héctor Lavoe
Picturehouse/New Line
Originally released: 2007
Category: DVD; FILM
EditorsPick: Just in time for the holidays!
It would be difficult for any salsa fan to resist this colorful,
rhythm-packed, drug drenched interpretation of the life of superstar
Héctor Lavoe. Jennifer López is, surprisingly, wonderful as Lavoe's
wife Puchi - especially her transformative portrayal of the woman as
the older, hardened, widower recanting her life with the singer.
Those of you who are familiar with the meteoric rise of the
transplanted Puerto Rican singer in the New York '70s salsa scene and
his tragic ending might not find much information that's not already
well documented, but seasoned salsa listeners will delight in
spotting familiar faces peppered through the film. Ismael Miranda is
quite powerful as Lavoe's unyielding father. Victor Manuelle plays
Ruben Blades debuting the song "El Cantante" - a gift to Lavoe - in a
small club. Yomo Toro's at a party, and one can spot Milton Cardona,
Eddie Montalvo, Tito Allen and a host of other salsa notables
throughout the film. Marc Anthony had obviously studied all available
footage of Lavoe, and gets the inflections and moves down pat. He
does a credible, if not quite compelling, job as the simultaneously
rising and falling Lavoe, whose constant battles with personal demons
push him further into drug addition, attempted suicide, a mental
breakdown and worse. Well, you know how it goes. Anthony's singing
is, however, phenomenal, as is the musical score by Sergio George.
Note should be made of John Ortiz who played Willie Colón, Federico
Castelluccio, who is perfect as the salsa mogul head of Fania, Jerry
Masucci, and Nelson Vasquez whose remarkable, uncanny interpretation
of Johnny Pacheco has to be seen to be believed. For the history, the
music, and all the good guys getting their 15 minutes of fame...
Highly Recommended. (BP)
